Your questions answered

No. There are no health or lifestyle questions when you apply, and Mortgage Protect does not require upfront medical underwriting.

However, medical conditions that existed before your policy started may not be covered. The income benefit is subject to an 18-month moratorium for pre-existing medical conditions.

Please read the policy documentation for the full definition and conditions.

You can select a deferred period of 30, 60, 90 or 180 days.

If illness or injury prevents you from carrying out your own occupation, you must remain eligible throughout your selected deferred period. Payments can then begin if we accept your claim.

You can choose a claim period of 3, 6 or 12 months.

Your payments may end sooner if you no longer meet the policy’s claim requirements.

Your cover can continue until age 68 if your mortgage ends before then.

The cover we offer will be assessed against your earnings and will not be higher than either 70% of earnings or your previous mortgage benefit. The maximum available benefit will also be limited to 70% of your earnings at the point of claim, less any regular income you receive during your claim as per the policy conditions.

You may be able to increase your mortgage benefit during an active remortgage application without further medical underwriting.

Any increase is subject to the policy terms and product limits, including the maximum mortgage benefit of £2,500 per month and maximum total monthly benefit of £3,000.

Your premiums will not automatically increase each year because of your age.

However, premiums are reviewable every three years. This means the amount you pay could change following a review.

We will tell you about any change in accordance with the policy conditions.

No. Mortgage Protect provides income benefit if illness or injury prevents you from carrying out your own occupation. It does not cover unemployment or redundancy.

  • If you are no longer named on a mortgage when you claim, and you have continued cover based on your earnings, your benefit will be limited to a maximum of 70% of your earnings at the point of claim, less any income taken into account under the policy conditions.
  • Medical conditions which existed in the 18 months before the policy started won’t be covered until you’ve gone 18 months without symptoms or treatment of those conditions.
  • Income-benefit payments can continue for no longer than your selected claim period.
