According to the provider's Bruised Britain research, which surveyed 2,000 UK adults, 33% of respondents who experienced an accident in the last three years described it as 'serious'.
Women were more likely to have a fall at home (38%) compared to male respondents (28%) and were more likely to have a fall outside the home (29%) compared to men (16%). Meanwhile, male respondents had more accidents in the workplace (14% compared to 11% of women) and in the car (13% compared to 8% of women).
For those aged under 35 who had an accident in the last three years, 23% experienced a sports-related injury and 8% suffered injuries from hazardous sports, compared to a national average of 16% and 4%, respectively.
Younger respondents were more likely to have experienced accidents involving scooters (14%, compared to the national average of 7%), push bikes (13% vs 8%) and mobile phones (13% vs 6%).
Under 35s were also more likely to have suffered an allergic reaction (10% vs 6%) or been electrocuted (9% vs 4%).
Financial strain
National Friendly said the research highlighted that accidents not only lead to physical injuries but also to financial strain, as younger people often lack the financial cushion to manage unexpected disruptions.
Around 37% of under-35s experienced at least one accident in the past three years, while 34% of claimants for National Friendly's Accident Only Income Protection were aged 35 or under.
Specifically, 79% of claimants were male, and those in manual work were at greatest risk of claiming; builders, delivery drivers and HGV drivers were the top three claimant occupations.
The most common places for an accident to happen were on a public road (13%), followed by the living room (9%), a public place outdoors (8%), the kitchen (8%) and the stairs (7%).
Graham Singleton, CEO, National Friendly, said, "Our Bruised Britain research highlights the growing risks of everyday accidents, particularly among younger generations who often juggle busy, active lifestyles."
"From sports injuries to accidents involving scooters and phones, the findings underscore the importance of having a safety net in place—both for health and finances."
