What is Accident Only Income Protection?

If your clients can't work due to an accident or non-impact injury and suffer a loss of earnings as a result, our Accident Only Income Protection will pay them a benefit while they get on the road to recovery.

Whilst full Income Protection will cover you for sickness as well, our unique Accident Only Income Protection covers you just for accidents. This often makes it a more affordable option or can be a solution for people struggling to get cover elsewhere.

NEW Non-Impact Injury cover

Your clients will now receive protection for a broader range of accidents and injuries. Our Non-Impact injury benefit is designed to cover certain debilitating injuries even if they occur without any external force.

What is the Non-Impact Injury Benefit?

This new benefit covers severe, non-contact injuries that prevent your client from working, such as:

Grade 3 tears (complete tears) of muscles, tendons, or ligaments that often require surgery.
Joint dislocations.

Who does it cover?

It’s included on all new and existing Accident Only Income Protection policies as standard and included in your cost of cover.

Key features of Accident Only Income Protection

Your client can choose a benefit amount of between £500 and £6,000, up to a maximum of 70% of your earnings. If you choose a 5-year claim period the maximum benefit you can choose is £2,000.
A choice of 1-, 2- or 5-years benefit period.
Protect your client against a fall in earnings between your policy starting and the time of your claim. You can protect them up to £3,000 a month of your main benefit by submitting proof of earnings within 6 months of your policy starting.
Your client has the option to pay extra to cover an enhanced list of hazardous pursuits. They choose cover of between £500 and £2,000 a month, up to their selected amount of main benefit. If they choose a 5-year claim period, the maximum hazardous pursuits cover would be £500 per month. Find out more below.
This policy provides a proportionate benefit if your client returns to work on lower earnings than before.
If they select this option and die as a result of an accident within 30 days of that accident, we’ll pay a lump sum equating to 1-, 2- or 5-years’ main benefit, whichever they choose when you apply.
Option to have level or age-costed reviewable payments

Premium Options

There are 2 ways that your client can pay for an Accident Only Income Protection policy. These are age-costed or level reviewable payments.

Level reviewable payments
Your client’s monthly payment will stay the same for the first 5 years. We will not raise it each year due to their age. We will review it every 5 years, based on general claims experience for the product, not their own personal claims experience.
Age-costed reviewable payments
This type of payment is likely to start lower than level reviewable payments, but is likely to increase each year by client’s age, and will be reviewed every 5 years, as above for level policies.

As well as the 2 payment options above, your client is able to choose if they want their policy benefits to increase each year to help keep up with inflation and any increases in your earnings. If they choose this option, their payment will increase each year to reflect their higher cover.

Our Accident Only Income Protection cover includes:

A contingency benefit that provides a maximum benefit of £500 a month for a maximum of 12 months, if they’re working for less than 16 hours a week and, due to an accident or non-impact injury, are unable to carry out normal daily duties.

A flexible policy end date –choice for the policy to end at any birthday between ages 50 and 70.

Waiver of premiums, so your clients don't pay anything whilst they’re receiving benefit from us.

An option for increased cover each year, to take account of inflation and increases in earnings. Payments will increase to reflect the higher cover.

A choice of waiting period before we start to pay the benefit from after their accident– 30, 60, 90, 180 or 365 days.

An option to change cover for certain benefits at a later date to match your clients changing needs.

Help cover the costs your client might face as a result of a bone fracture

A cash payout can’t heal them – they'll need time for that. But it can help them meet the costs associated with the impact of their injury.

The payout they’ll receive will be determined by which category fracture they've suffered.

Your client can claim for a range of fractures classified as Minor, Moderate or Major. The cover areas from their skull down to their feet and range from £1,000 to £3,000.

Free access to Friendly GP and Friendly GP+

Our virtual GP service, Friendly GP+, is a free added benefit to your Accident Only Income Protection policy. It can be accessed over the phone or online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This means you always have easy access to a doctor when you need their help.

Friendly GP

Friendly GP access is included immediately for members and their families (living at the same address) with the following policies:

If the GP decides your condition requires further investigation or treatment, they can issue an open private referral letter to enable you to access the health care you need.

You can conveniently book an appointment with a practising GP at a day and time that suits you. You can book digitally via The Friendly GP web app, or via the 24/7 telephone help

Appointments are available 24/7. You can book either a telephone or video consultation and choose whether to speak with a male or female doctor.

Should the GP feel you would benefit from prescription medication, the medication can be delivered to you at any UK address or to a nominated pharmacy of your choice. You will need to cover the costs of prescriptions.

The GP can also issue fit notes if necessary. You will need to cover the costs of the medication and delivery fees.

Aches and Pains helpline. Physiotherapists help restore movement and function in patients that have been affected by injury, illness or disability. They will do this by delivering personalised exercise plans and supporting you to be able to safely and independently complete a home exercise programme with verbal prompts and guidance.

Friendly GP+ (policies opened after 22 October 2024)

Free Friendly GP+ access is included for members and their families (living at the same address) immediately with the following policies:

Provides information and guidance on legal matters such as consumer rights, property, landlord/tenant, family and motoring law.

Support with advice for managers who are assisting their teams through any difficulties.

Guidance with money matters, including managing creditors, budgeting and debt management plans.

Provides information on a wide range of mental health and wellbeing related topics such as sleep, diet or exercise so you can start to improve your day to day life.

The Wellbeing Hub is a confidential and secure online resource available 24 hours a day to help you look after your mental health. With access to monthly newsletters, insightful articles and short videos, there are lots of ideas on ways to improve your day to day wellbeing.

To apply for a policy you have to be:

aged between 18 to 59 when your policy starts
working and living in the UK, excluding Northern Ireland. This doesn’t include the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man .
working at least 16 hours a week
able to pay for it from a UK bank account
registered with a UK doctor with access to at least the last two years of your medical records

No, we won’t ask any medical questions at the policy application.

This could make the policy a good option for any clients who are struggling to get full Income Protection.

This policy pays out if the policyholder has an accident or non-impact injury as defined, and this results in an injury where they can no longer work and lose earnings as a result.

We cover a wide list of occupations but there are some we aren’t able to offer cover for.
