National Friendly funds school trip to see Matilda the Musical at The Bristol Hippodrome

Thirty Year 5 and 6 children from Cabot Primary School were treated to a performance of “Matilda the Musical” at The Bristol Hippodrome last week, a trip organised by Bristol-based mutual society, National Friendly. Working with the school through the local charity Ablaze, which targets inequality of opportunity amongst the young people in the South West, this is the second school trip arranged for Cabot Primary School children by National Friendly, following on from a visit to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at M Shed in January.

Jonathan Long, CEO at National Friendly, commented, “It is such a pleasure to be able to provide activities such as these for local schools in our community. This is one of the first of many new experiences we will facilitate for the pupils at Cabot Primary School, and we’re proud to say we’re playing our small part in making happy memories as these young pupils take their journey through the education system.”

Jenny Hutchinson, Theatre Director at The Bristol Hippodrome said, “Theatre has the power to transform young lives and can encourage self-expression. It can also build confidence, inspire creativity and improve communication and social skills.

“This partnership enables us to reach out to more communities and provide children with new experiences, giving them the opportunity to discover the enjoyment and magic created through experiencing live theatre. We also offer a number of community outreach initiatives including our career insight mornings, touch tours and assisted performances to ensure we are consistently welcoming everyone in our community.”

Sally Ridley, Ablaze’s Primary Partnership Manager, commented on the ongoing partnership, “We are delighted to see that National Friendly and Cabot Primary School’s partnership is flourishing into other exciting opportunities for the pupils, such as this trip to the Hippodrome to see Matilda the Musical. Many thanks to National Friendly and all those involved in giving these Year 5 and 6 pupils such a lovely school trip.”

The pupils, some of whom were in the midst of preparing for their SATs exams, were accompanied by Year 6 teacher Amy Tupman, who commented on the school trip, “We are incredibly grateful to National Friendly for providing our children with the opportunity to see Matilda at The Bristol Hippodrome; for many of our children this was their first experience of both watching a musical and visiting The Hippodrome. When we got back to school after the show, I asked a few children for their favourite part of the show. Every child said the same thing: "All of it!" Thank you so much for your generosity, National Friendly! This was an experience we'll never forget.”
